Washable nursing pads are economical and comfortable as well as easy to use. How do you choose washable nursing pads?
First, you'll need to understand how much you leak and decide how many pads you will use in a day. If you are still pregnant, you can plan for about 2-3 pairs of nursing pads per day.
Next, choose a fabric combination. Plain washable wool, flannel or hemp pads are great for everyday use if colors and patterns are not important to you. If you like to have fancy underthings, you'll probably be glad you invested just a little more in nicer pads.
Wool, hemp and bamboo are all good choices since they all naturally discourage bacterial growth.
In any case, you will want to choose the most breathable option that will work for you. PUL backed nursing pads are waterproof, which can be very useful if you tend to leak a lot. However, these pads need to be changed often since they are not breathable and can encourage infections if they are often damp for long periods. I usually recommend that PUL pads be used for away from home and more natural pads be used at home or whenever a heavy duty pad is not needed. |
